Breaking Barriers: Redefining Professionalism for Inclusive Workplaces

Breona Walker PresentingThe origins of professionalism can be traced back to historical contexts where social structures were deeply entrenched in racism, perpetuating hierarchies that marginalized certain groups. The concept of professionalism, initially designed to uphold standards and ethics, has often been wielded as a tool to maintain existing power dynamics. This has resulted in a system that disproportionately disadvantages workers of color, non-binary and LGBTQIA+ individuals, and other underrepresented groups (such as women and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds). The criteria for what is considered "professional" have traditionally aligned with Eurocentric norms, reinforcing a narrow definition that excludes diverse perspectives, experiences, and expression. In contemporary workplaces, addressing the impact of professionalism as a racist social construct is crucial for fostering inclusivity and equity. Implicit biases, often rooted in systemic racism, can permeate professional environments, affecting hiring decisions, promotions, and overall workplace dynamics. Additionally, white supremacy culture, which values individualism, perfectionism, and a sense of urgency, can create hostile environments for marginalized individuals. To counteract these issues, it is essential for workplaces to prioritize awareness and education on implicit bias and challenge the perpetuation of these biases. Creating a culture that acknowledges and actively works to dismantle these structures not only benefits the well-being of workers of color, underrepresented groups, and non-binary individuals, but also enhances productivity and innovation by embracing diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
