This interactive lecture helps professionals answer the question: How can I contribute in the fight for equity? Through self-reflection, discussion and short group exercises facilitator Elizabeth Amaya-Fernandez will guide us to:

  • Identify ways in which colonization, white supremacy, and implicit bias impact our work as professionals.
  • Analyze how upholding systems of oppression maintain the status quo in society.
  • Recognize how self-awareness is an essential tool in dismantling systems of oppression.

Presenter:

Elizabeth Amaya-Fernandez, Professor of Health and Physical Education, Monmouth University
Professor Amaya-Fernandez is a well-known speaker and educator/trainer on public health and social justice issues. She has conducted trainings nationwide and in Latin America on topics of sexuality, global health, community engagement, and substance use prevention. Professor Amaya-Fernandez pictured leading a class with the background stating "Privilege is when you think something is not a problem because it's not a problem to you personally."She has more than twenty-five years of working as a health educator in higher education and non-profit organizations. She has been working as an adjunct professor at various colleges & universities in New Jersey since 2006. Liz is the founder and director of Artemis Retreats, LLC, where she offers health education, wellness retreats, and doula services.
