Unpacking the AI Hype

Suddenly, science fiction seems to be coming off the page and screen and into our offices and lives. We're told AI will take away our jobs, or it will free us from the burdens of work. Systems are built to reduce human bias, yet in many areas bias remains or gets worse. If it all feels overwhelming, or you're not sure where to start, this session will get you up to speed with a brief primer, then we'll pivot to a case study before wrapping with a Q&A to crowdsource ideas on the future we want to make.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Deepened understanding of what AI and related technologies are and are not
  2. Awareness of social and ethical issues arising from advances in AI and related tech
  3. Ability to apply 1 & 2 to personal, office, and institutional decision making

Chris Miciek, Director, Career Development Center, Jefferson University

Chris began with an executive coaching firm before returning to higher education. In 2002 he began building the first 100% online career center in the US, pioneering online technology and social media to deliver career development advising and instruction. Since that start he's presented at state and regional ACEs as well as NACE on online career services and emerging technology, including creating a keynote panel at MWACE 2007 and leading a NACE President's Tech Summit at the 2009 annual conference. Chris authored a chapter to the NACE Case Study Guide on delivering career development online and co-authored a chapter on navigating institutional mergers. He continues to stare at the horizon.
