Associate Provost for Immersive Learning and Career Design, Drew University

Daniel Pascoe Aguilar, Ph.D., MDiv, is passionate about problem-solving and collaborating with students, alumni, the university community, and community organizations on meaningful partnerships and powerful strategies for the development of a diverse, interculturally developed, and purposeful next generation of leaders and our joint capacity to create a better reality. Currently, Daniel is associate provost for immersive learning and career design at Drew University in the New York City larger metropolitan area, where he has the honor of leading Launch.

Launch is a comprehensive, equitable approach to undergraduate education designed to facilitate all Drew University students’ identification of their purpose, their preparation for their careers, and their contribution to their communities and/or the world. Launch is powered by 7 integrated high impact practices: 

  1. A required Launch introduction course
  2. All students’ creation and development of a Launch Plan portfolio
  3. Multiple, guaranteed Immersive Experiences as part of the curriculum
  4. Students’ development and articulation of transferable skills
  5. The support of an academic, personal and career network of mentors
  6. 10 Career Community and eight identity/affinity community opportunity, network, resource and support hubs
  7. Seven integrated systems in a dynamic, individualized Launch platform (launch.drew.edu).

Prior to his tenure at Drew, Daniel served as executive director of Career Services at Ithaca College, director of the University of Oregon Career Center, director of Career Services at Seattle University, director of alumni career services and associate director of employer relations at the University of North Texas, senior associate director and chair of career courses at Indiana University, director of the crisis center for homeless families of the SF County, and minister in diverse religious organizations in México and the US.

For the last 12 years, Daniel has offered consulting services to universities, their career centers, and community organizations, as well as speaking and training opportunities on the preparation of the next generation of leaders and the enhancement of the diversity, equity and inclusion of our work. He has also been a songwriter, classical pop and oratorio/opera singer, and a recording artist throughout his life, including the publication of seven albums. He has completed three graduate degrees in the US: a Ph.D. in Educational Systems from IU, a Master of Divinity from Palmer Theological Seminary, and an MS in Education from IU, as well as a BA in Industrial Design from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in México.

In 2014, Daniel received the UO Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award. Throughout the last few years, he has had the opportunity to serve as co-chair of the Future Talent Council D&I Board, faculty of the Career Services Institute, co-chair of the DU Committee on Reimagining Undergraduate Education, and chair of the IC Experiential Learning Alliance, the UO and IC Student Employment Enhancement initiatives, the UO Division of Student Life Multicultural Competence Organizational Development effort, the UOAdvantage Design Team, and the UO International Student Career Alliance.

Preparing a Diverse, Interculturally Developed and Purpose-Driven Next Generation of Leaders Ready to Respond to Our Societal and Global Systemic Challenges

It is clear that we are facing systemic crises. Think of public health, the economy, poverty and hunger, social injustice and systemic racism, international relations, immigration, global warming, etc. These, and many other challenges, are no longer local. They're not just affecting an institution, a community, or a country; they're affecting all of us at a global level. Unfortunately, these unsolved crises are beginning to fall on the shoulders of our new generations, the students we serve, the students who we need to become members of our next generation of leaders. 

We have a once in a lifetime opportunity, and responsibility, to leverage the unprecedented systemic change we are experiencing, to support the 20 million college students who have joined our institutions in search of meaning and readiness, and to diversify our workforce and develop it interculturally, so that we don’t only use this moment to survive and replicate the status quo, but to redesign ourselves, our work, and our institutions to develop a new reality for our students and for society and the globe. 

It is time to ensure that every single one of our students has access to all the networks, experiences, opportunities, and resources we can make available to them, and we must prepare our next generation of leaders to find their purpose, to value diversity, equity and inclusion as an asset to our decision-making and performance as a human race, and to be ready to address the systemic challenges we are currently facing. 

Through powerful intercultural development, identity development and multicultural organizational models (i.e., DMIS, MMDI, MCOD), this session will explore the critical importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in our work, the paradigm-shifting meaning of DEI and the five systemic levels at which Dr. Aguilar recommends that we enhance the DEI of our efforts and outcomes and respond in kind to our systemic crises.

Dr. Annie Nguyen is dedicated to increasing intercultural competence through comprehensive international programs. As part of her MBA/EdD dual degree program with Texas Christian University, she examined photo documentation and photoethnography as a means of assessing intercultural competence in short-term study abroad. Her background in architecture, work abroad in Japan and Australia, and her research have cultivated her perspective on the importance of intentional program design and continue to inform her current work.

Building Intercultural Competence: Frameworks for Adapting to the Unexpected

One of the core components of intercultural competence is the ability to adapt across multiple cultural frameworks and situations. This is rooted in various theoretical frameworks and assessment tools related to the process of intercultural growth. Now more than ever, that adaptability and resilience should be nurtured. Part of that is understanding the theories of intercultural competence, but also in embracing the growing visual libraries and digital tools that can enhance intercultural learning through programs that engage students’ agency, empathy, and storytelling. In the face of an uncertain global economic environment, intercultural engagement at home and abroad (even virtually) offers perspective on ways we can further develop students’ empathy and skills for navigating their networks and careers.
