Emotional Intelligence
April 5, 2019 | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

York College | York, PA

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence is often described as an individual having “emotional awareness, or the ability to identify and name one’s own emotions; the ability to harness those emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problem solving; and the ability to manage emotions, which includes both regulating one’s own emotions when necessary and cheering up or calming down other people.” Source: Psychology Today

Featured Session: Fostering Leadership and Membership through Emotional Intelligence

In increasingly complex and stressful work environments, the extent to which managers lead and mentor others with emotional intelligence (EI) can have a significant impact on professional development and effectiveness. Join us as Dr. John J. Sosik, Professor of Management and Organization of Penn State University, explores the role of EI in fostering leadership and mentoring effectiveness, the domains, and competencies of EI, and strategies to teach EI to students and new hires with high-quality leadership and mentoring relationships. After completing this session, you will feel ready to face the challenges of complex and stressful work environments.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how emotion, self-awareness, and self-control influence leadership and mentoring.
  • Understand the domains and competencies of El broadly.
  • Recognize personal areas of development of EI.
  • Identify criteria for establishing high-quality leadership and mentoring relationship with EI.
  • Demonstrate ways to strengthen EI in self, students, and new hires.

Call for Roundtable Facilitators!

Do you have knowledge of EI and want to share? Submit a proposal to lead a structured conversation about the EI-related topic of your choosing! Roundtable facilitators do not need to have specific training in EI; the focus is on learning peer-led strategies for integrating EI-related concepts into working with students and colleagues. Creative approaches are encouraged. Additionally, selected facilitators receive a discounted registration fee of $20!

Each roundtable session will be 30 minutes in length. You may be asked to lead your session more than once. The roundtable can be content-focused (highlighting strategies and examples of using EI with coworkers or supervisors) or dialogue-focused (asking strategic questions on how the group can learn from each other’s EI-related practices.)
