As a critical member of the Boston College Career Center Career Education team, the Assistant Director serves as a career coach within a designated career cluster, in this case, science, technology, and engineering. This role is responsible for one-on-one career coaching, career programming, networking events, other related educational events, and employer engagement. The assistant director must be extremely relatable to students, a strong relationship builder (with diverse stakeholders including alumni, employers, and faculty), adept at event management and adaptable to changing trends in student interests, and market trends. In addition, the individual in this role works closely with all members of the Career Center team and operates within the broader vision and mission of the Career Center to empower students to pursue lives of meaning and impact. The Assistant Director’s work will be informed by our career development model – Explore, Prepare, Act – which considers the needs of students at each stage of this process. The Center embraces the value of a Jesuit liberal arts education, which prepares students to discern their gifts and talents and how they want to use them to engage the world.

Individual and Group Career Coaching

  • Serve as an industry expert for a designated career cluster, staying up-to-date on recruiting practices, hiring timelines, and industry trends.
  • Provide one-on-one and group career coaching to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent alumni on career-specific information to help them prepare for and conduct a job, internship, or graduate school search; topics include industry exploration, search strategies, preparation of application materials, interview preparation, and salary negotiation.
  • Create and update educational materials on a range of career topics, including web content and worksheets.
  • Adapt coaching style to the unique backgrounds and identities of Boston College students.
  • Maintain proficiency with online tools, resources, and career coaching methods to continuously improve services to students.
  • Support the overall work of the Boston College Career Center by providing career coaching to all students during drop-ins and during peak times in the academic year programming, strategy, relationship management & engagement.
  • Develop and implement a plan to address the needs of students interested in pursuing careers in designated career cluster areas; develop and present career development related programming on a variety of career topics in different formats.
  • Build relationships and maintain regular contact with relevant campus partners in Student Affairs, Mission and Ministry, Academic Affairs, and student organizations.
  • In close collaboration with colleagues in employer outreach and on-campus recruiting, maintain relationships with alumni/employers in your cluster to engage them in on-campus programs and learn from them about trends in their industry.
  • Review and recommend appropriate career resources and web content for students seeking jobs, internships, or graduate school related to science, technology, and engineering.
  • Conduct assessment and evaluation to support programmatic development and outcomes.
  • Assist with administrative responsibilities such as operations planning, data management, and reporting for the Career Center, Division of Student Affairs, and Boston College.
  • Maintain comprehensive records on engagement with students and employersCross-Functional Teams and University Initiatives.
  • Serve on various cross-functional teams to promote the vision and direction of the Career Center; support the overall work of the Career Center team’s strategic priorities and major events and programs, including career fairs and Endeavor.
  • Lead a team in implementing one or more Career Center team-wide programs or initiatives.
  • Contribute to the Career Center’s strategic planning process in order to evolve Career Center services and programs.
  • Represent Boston College and the Career Center in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards and changes; revise programs to reflect trends and increase the center’s visibility of professionals in the field.
  • Represent the Career Center on university committees about community issues.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Ability to design, deliver, and present to students and colleagues at workshops and special events.
  • Experience in developing and implementing career-related programming and/or trainings.
  • Commitment to working with diverse populations (e.g. AHANA, LGBTQ, first generation).
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented working style and the ability to multitask and thrive in a changing, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be flexible and function effectively as a team leader or individual contributor.
  • Evidence of the ability to collaborate and build partnerships across the university, other institutions, and professional organizations.
  • Ability to adapt and change with organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated comfort with technology and willingness to use technology to deliver career programming and information.
  • Willingness to conduct program assessment, look critically at results and use findings to improve Career Center services and resources.
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed.

Preferred qualifications include

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, Human Resource Management, professional degree, or related degree preferred; or industry experience in a STEM discipline.
