Job Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a comprehensive urban university with a nationally recognized academic health center. UAB is the only public, four-year degree granting university in the state’s largest metropolitan area. UAB is the largest research institution in the state of Alabama, and the University is the largest employer in Birmingham. UAB attracts the best and brightest students from Alabama, the nation, and more than 100 countries around the world. In fall of 2017, 574 new students enrolled in the UAB Honors College, bringing the enrollment to over 1,800. In 2017, the University had its eighth year of overall record enrollment, with over 20,900 undergraduate, graduate, pre-professional, and post-doctoral students. Nearly 70 percent of the student body attends the University full-time, and more than 73 percent of the freshmen live on campus. UAB is among 51 public and private universities classified by the Carnegie Foundation for both “very high research activity” and “community engagement.” UAB receives more than $400 million annually in research grants and contracts, and ranks 10th among all public universities in funding from the National Institutes of Health.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Experience in the Division of Student Affairs, the Director of Career and Professional Development oversees a broad portfolio of responsibilities that support an institutional focus on student success and excellence in teaching, learning, and research. The director provides overall vision and leadership for the Career and Professional Development (CPD) department, which serves the University’s undergraduate and graduate students, as well as alumni and employers. The director promotes optimal learning outcomes and career readiness competencies through a range of functions, programs, and services, including the maximal utilization of the Purple Briefcase (“Hire a Blazer”) career management database that provides quality opportunities for student and employer interaction. The director oversees a robust program of career advising, ensuring its integration with other career development offices on campus and with students’ overall career-related learning goals, and oversees all aspects of job search strategies and employment services offered to students and alumni. Additionally, the director oversees the cultivation and development of new employers and job opportunities for students and alumni; facilitates continuous improvement and leads change to ensure the CPD department is responsive to student career development needs and evolving market trends; optimizes available technology for communication and the effective delivery of services; and implements effective data collection, analysis, and reporting systems that demonstrate career-related outcomes and inform strategic resource allocation and direction. This position manages a $588,000 budget and supervises a high-performing staff of seven, as well as a graduate intern and student staff.


Requirements

A master’s degree in education, business, counseling, college student personnel/student affairs, or other relevant field, and a substantial track record of progressively responsible experience in a career development, student affairs, or a closely related higher education environment are required. The successful candidate should possess strong organizational and problem-solving abilities, short- and long-term planning skills, and knowledge of current software technology, as well as excellent communication, conflict resolution, presentation, process improvement, training, and other leadership skills. An understanding of student development and leadership theory, along with its impact on practice, is desired. A demonstrated commitment to diversity and customer service, as well as the ability to develop strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, are essential.
