City Year is a nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders make a difference in the lives of children and transform schools and neighborhoods. City Year is a proud member of AmeriCorps. During the site visit students will:
- Meet current corps members, staff, and other students interested in making a difference with City Year
- Learn about how to get involved with City Year as a college student or after graduation
- Have the opportunity to witness a City Year team in action at a local school
Students will be provided with light refreshments as they receive an introduction to City Year and an office tour.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about City Year’s work addressing the national dropout crisis in public schools. Students will engage in a Leadership Workshop and/or Service Panel with staff from various departments and other nonprofit organizations.
Students will have a lunch break to engage in a casual roundtable discussion with City Year. Students may bring a bag lunch or purchase from one of the vendors in the area.
City Year staff will escort students on public transportation out into the field. Students will meet a current City Year team and observe their after school service with children. Students are responsible for their own public transportation cost and will be dismissed from the field.
Providing hope and opportunity to adults with developmental disabilities and their families is the mission of the Barber National Institute. During this site visit, students will be given the opportunity to explore the area of Mental Health and Non-Profit Organizations. This visit will start with a panel discussion and conclude with a facility tour. There will be fun activities along the way.
