Public Service Internship Coordinator

Job Description:

The Center for Community Engagement at Amherst College seeks a Public Service Internship Coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating a public service internship program that is a national model in higher education. The Public Service Internship Coordinator will work closely with Amherst College faculty, alumni, community partners, students and staff to ensure that the program provides powerful learning experiences for students as well as contributes to addressing public problems. The program is a key component in Amherst College’s commitment to educate students for leadership in a diverse democracy. The Coordinator will support students in securing meaningful, educationally rich, reciprocal and sustainable internships with a wide variety of local, national, and international host organizations. The responsibilities of this position include: managing and improving the program, maximizing the potential of student experiential learning, overseeing the award process for funded internships, setting up systems that make it easier to track 500+ sites, 250+ applications and ~200 awards and assessing the value of student internships. This position will collaborate closely with the Career Center and be a key contributor to a multi-department team of staff who are identifying high quality internship opportunities and advising students about those opportunities. Amherst College is a private undergraduate liberal arts college for men and women, with 1,800 students and 200 faculty members. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred; and 3-5 years’ experience in working directly with students, career development, student development or related field preferred. The successful candidate will have a clear understanding of the role of community engagement and social justice initiatives at a private liberal arts college and an appreciation of the College’s relationship with a diverse range of constituencies. He/she should possess strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; demonstrated experience managing multiple projects; and display an ability to develop and maintain systems that simplify the tracking of significant amounts of information. Occasional evening and weekend work.
